Fee Fie Foe Fum, I smell the blood of a Scotsman

Well, my brilliant idea of a Cranium tournament ended up being a bit more low key. Just Cari and my cousins and their very cute kids. Matt and I kicked Cari and Heather's asses!! Woo hoo (doing the victory dance) Was set to make artichoke and spinach stuffed mushrooms, hummus, and lemon pepper chicken with strawberry filled cupcakes. I ended up making the hummus and the cupcakes (which were most awesome, white cupcakes with a strawberry inside and strawberry, whipped cream and mascarpone mixed up topping oh yeah) My cousin's wife made a really good fruit salad and Cari brought a veggie tray.

So tonight I needed to use the mushrooms so I saute'd them with garlic and spinach and chicken then topped it with this artichoke pesto I found at Trader Joe's and threw in some pasta and parm. It was a pretty good experiment.

I'm a little freaked out. I went to lunch with my grandma and brother. Wasn't too carb heavy, salad and salmon although I did eat too much bread. But I practically passed out on the way home and was snoozing at grandma's. That's what happened to the ex-best friend I refer to on occassion. She kept falling asleep after eating and was diagnosed with Diabetes. I know it's a possibility for me, but with the working out I'm hoping to head it off at the pass. I just need to make an appointment for a physical anyhow, it's been a while.

Oh, and if you're reading this my little lurking friend, show yourself!

Oh, man! I'm going to have to stop reading blogs before I fix dinner. First Spring's bar-b-que and now your awesome sounding meals!

*grumble* For some reason, that salad isn't sounding as good as it did....

I'd definitely get checked for diabetes ASAP. A lot of people don't even know they have it.

It never hurts to check for high blood sugar, and it's just a little finger prick to test. You can have high blood sugar problems without being diagnosed as diabetic. I highly recommend not seeing a generalist -- if you have insurance to cover it, go to an endocrinologist for blood sugar/diabetes issues.

Medication can help if you do have high blood sugar, but diet and exercise are key, as I've had to discover on my own.

I was diagnosed with HBS about two years ago, but the hct test was 6.8, just under the 7.0 for a diagnosis of diabetes. I was poking my finger every damned morning for a year, but even with medication (glucophage) my B.S. was out of control, because I hadn't modified my diet at all. Once I started working on diet and exercise, I was able to come off the meds and my B.S. was in the safe range.

If you have blood sugar concerns, you also have to watch out for your triglycerides and bad cholesterol levels, as they can affect the blood sugar levels. I'm always getting yelled at for those two.

But it's a 'lifestyle' choice, it's not something I can choose from one day to the next. I have to be careful all the time. That's why gaining back those 10 pounds this last winter really bothered me -- weight gain puts me at higher risk again.

Oh, and not too carb heavy, but you ate too much bread???? Bread is some of the worst carbs! Say bye-bye to bread...
